MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Welcome back to the second half of what I perceive will be an excellent school term. As we embark upon 2010, we are faced with turbulent times as a nation, state, community, and school district.
The Leland School District has received an accountability rating of At Risk of Failing from the Mississippi Department of Education. (See Children's First Annual Report- District Report Card link). Leland Elementary School and Leland High School each received ratings of Successful and Leland School Park received a rating of At Risk of Failing. The rigor of the current new test and new accountability model moved us from our traditional rating of superior, level 5 school district, to where we are today. This did not change our goal of providing the best education possible to all children in the Leland School District. It did not change our goal of increasing the academic achievement of all students in the Leland School District. It presented to us a greater challenge. The challenge of making sure that students’ learning exceed state standards and align with the ever changing times. We also face the challenge of recovering the Pride of the Leland School District. We have faced challenges in the past, but we have always overcome. This will be no different.
The challenge of meeting our ultimate goals of providing students in the Leland School District with the quality education that they deserve and need in this ever-changing world will not come easy. I am looking forward to a great 2010. We have some work to do and I know we are up to the challenge.
Soaring to Achieve Academic Excellence,
